A Garden Pond for Amphibians: Three Zones, a Gentle Slope, No Fish

How to build a natural spring pond where frogs and newts truly settle in: three zones, one gently sloping bank, and deliberately no fish.

A pond changes a garden faster than almost anything else. The moment the water has settled, life arrives: pond skaters glide across the surface, dragonflies lay their eggs, and if you are lucky, the first common frog is sitting on the bank by the second spring. That is no accident. It is the result of a handful of decisions you make right at the start. The most important one: no fish.

In this article you build a pond made for amphibians. Three zones, a gently sloping exit, dense bankside planting, and deliberately no goldfish. The best time for the job is early spring, roughly from mid-March to mid-May · CW 12 to 20. By then the soil has dried out, the frogs are not yet on the move, and the plants have the whole season to take root.

  • Patience. Amphibians colonise new ponds on their own. Never move spawn or frogs from other waters; it is illegal and spreads disease.

Why a pond without fish

It sounds contradictory at first. A pond without fish, so what is the water even for? The answer is simple: fish and amphibians do not belong in the same basin. Goldfish, koi and even the harmless-looking sunbleak are thorough predators. They eat frog spawn, newt larvae and tadpoles until nothing of the next generation is left. In a garden pond stocked with fish, a generation of amphibians almost never grows up.

Then there is water quality. Fish need feeding, feeding brings nutrients, nutrients bring algae. Keep fish and sooner or later you need a pump, a filter and electricity. An amphibian pond lives on the opposite principle: nutrient-poor, technology-free, in balance with itself. That is not only more ecological, it is also less work.

And the guests you get in return are worth the effort. The common frog, common toad, smooth newt and alpine newt are among the native species that suffer badly in settled areas from the loss of small waters. Every natural garden pond is a stepping stone in a network that has grown ever more threadbare through land consolidation and filled-in pools. Your pond is therefore more than decoration; it is habitat.

The best fish pond for amphibians is the one no fish has ever swum in.

Old gardener's wisdom

The right spot

Before you reach for the spade, the location decides between success and frustration. Amphibian ponds like sun. Plan a spot that gets at least five to six hours of light a day, ideally in the morning. Sun warms the water, and warm water means fast development for spawn and larvae. A pond in permanent shade under trees stays cold, turns green more readily and fills with leaves in autumn.

Even so, keep your distance from large deciduous trees, above all walnut and oak. Their leaves burden the water, and a handful of walnut leaves releases substances that do pond life no good. Two to three metres from the crown is a good rule of thumb.

Think about the surroundings on land as well. Amphibians spend most of the year out of the water. Within reach they need a hideaway: a dry-stone wall, a deadwood pile, a patch of unmown meadow, a heap of leaves to overwinter in. A pond in the middle of a closely mown lawn is an island with no bridge. If you plan a wild corner at the same time, you do both in one go.

Do not cart the spoil away. With a few stones and some deadwood, the mound of soil beside the pond becomes a perfect land refuge. That gives you, right at the water's edge, the retreat the animals need to overwinter.

The three zones

The heart of an amphibian pond is its profile. A bucket with vertical walls is not a pond, it is a trap. Instead, plan three zones that blend into one another.

  • Deep zone (60 to 80 cm)

    The frost-free retreat. From 60 cm down the pond does not freeze to the bottom even in a hard winter, so newts and overwintering larvae survive. You need no more than 80 cm for a pure amphibian pond.

  • Shallow water (10 to 30 cm)

    The nursery. This is where the water warms fastest, where spawning happens, where the tadpoles grow. This area should be generous and may happily take up half the pond surface.

  • Marsh zone (0 to 10 cm)

    The soft transition. Permanently moist ground at the edge, where marsh plants root and young animals hide. The marsh zone interlocks water and land and is at the same time the gentle exit.

More important than exact centimetres is the transition between the zones. Build ramps, not steps. Each zone flows gently into the next, so an animal can walk from deep water all the way to land without ever climbing an edge. This is exactly where many ready-made pond shells from the DIY store fail: their steep ledges look tidy, but for a hedgehog or a young frog they are impassable.

The gentle exit decides everything

If you remember one single thing from this article, let it be this: at least one bank must run out flat, at no more than 20 degrees. A beach of gravel and sand like that is your pond's life insurance. Frogs and newts climb in and out over it, and hedgehogs, mice and insects that have fallen in save themselves over it.

Steep liner edges, by contrast, become a death trap. An animal that cannot get out again drowns. Spend half a square metre more on a gentle gravel beach rather than on quick depth.

Step by step: building the pond

  1. Mark the outline (CW 12)

    Lay a rope or a garden hose on the lawn and shape the outline. Curved, irregular edges look more natural and offer more bank length than a circle. Plan at least four to five square metres of water surface; below that the temperature swings too much.

  2. Dig out the zones

    Dig from the outside in. First the marsh zone as a broad, flat rim, then the shallow water, and last the deep zone in the centre. Shape every transition as a ramp, not a step. Check now and again with a spirit level on a board that the top edge sits at one height all the way round.

  3. Lay the fleece and liner

    Remove stones and roots, then a protective fleece goes down on the base. Over it the pond liner, ideally EPDM rubber: durable, foldable and free of plasticisers that could leach into the water. Lay the liner loosely into every zone without stretching it.

  4. Add substrate and gravel beach

    A thin layer of washed, unfertilised sand or pond substrate on the bottom gives the plants a hold. At the flat bank you build up the gravel beach, from coarse gravel in the water to fine sand on land. Less nutrient is always better here.

  5. Fill with rainwater

    Fill the pond slowly with rainwater from the butt, not with tap water. Rainwater is soft and nutrient-poor, tap water brings lime and nitrate and with them the first algal bloom. If you have too little collected water, top up with tap water and let the pond stand for two to three weeks before you plant.

  6. Conceal the edges

    Trim the surplus liner only at the very end, and leave enough rim all the way round. Cover it with stones, gravel and bankside plants so that no black liner lies exposed in the sun. That protects the material from UV and looks natural.

If you build in early spring, there can be another frost after filling. That is no problem for the finished pond; a thin layer of ice harms neither liner nor plants. But wait to set out frost-sensitive marsh plants until after the mid-May cold snap, around CW 20.

Planting it right

Plants are your pond's air conditioning and oxygen supply. They shade the water, draw nutrients out of it and so pull the rug from under the algae. Go for native species; they are adapted to our insects and amphibians. Spread the planting across the zones.

For the deep and shallow zones, submerged plants such as rigid hornwort supply oxygen. Floating-leaf plants like the native water lily shade the surface and slow the algae. In the shallow and marsh zones, reeds and perennials bring structure that newts fasten their eggs to and dragonfly larvae climb up.

The marsh marigold 'Caltha palustris' is one of the first spring bloomers at the pond's edge and lights up exactly when the amphibians are on the move. Pair it with purple loosestrife 'Lythrum salicaria', an upright perennial whose purple candles draw countless insects from July to September. For the permanently moist marsh zone, water plantain 'Alisma plantago-aquatica' also fits well, its name giving away who feels at home here.

If you want nectar a little further from the water, hemp agrimony 'Eupatorium cannabinum' on the moist bank edge is a magnet for butterflies. It fits well with a bed you are laying out for butterflies anyway; how that works is in our article on attracting butterflies.

Plant into baskets rather than straight into the substrate. Reeds like bulrush and common reed otherwise run riot and blow apart your whole zoning within a few years. In a planting basket it stays controllable, and you can divide it easily in autumn.

The pond through the year

An amphibian pond is little work, but a bit of attention pays off. In early spring, when the first warm nights arrive, the spawning migration begins. From late February to April the common frog and common toad move to their water. Keep the pond quiet in this time: no digging at the bank, no technology. Whatever else you tackle in the garden in spring is bundled together in the gardening calendar for April.

In summer the water level drops in the heat. Top up as needed with collected rainwater, never with a hard jet from the hose. Blanketweed, which often appears in early summer, is best wound out on a stick like candy floss. It disappears by itself once the plants shade the water.

In autumn the leaves fall. Stretch a net over the pond if you need to, or fish out leaves regularly so that no sludge builds up on the bottom. Cut bankside perennials back only in spring, not in autumn: insects overwinter in the hollow stems, and the seed heads are food.

In winter you leave the pond alone. All that matters is that the surface does not freeze over completely and seal in decay gases. A floating ring of polystyrene or a bundle of reed stems keeps a small opening free. Never smash a hole in the ice by force; the shock wave harms the animals overwintering below.

Never move spawn, tadpoles or frogs from other waters into your pond. Under German nature conservation law this is prohibited, and it spreads dangerous diseases such as the amphibian fungus chytrid, which can wipe out whole populations. A well-built pond colonises itself; the animals find it reliably.

Safety for children

Open water and small children need a clear plan. Even a few centimetres of water can be dangerous for a toddler. As long as small children are unsupervised in the garden, secure the pond with a sturdy, close-meshed grid just below the water surface, or with a fence. A shallow marsh area instead of deep steep walls lowers the risk further, but it does not replace supervision.

Can I add a few fish to an amphibian pond later after all?

No, and this is the single most important rule. Even a few goldfish or sunbleak eat a pond empty within one season: spawn, tadpoles and newt larvae vanish completely. An amphibian pond stays permanently fish-free. If you want fish, you need a second, separate basin for them. Both in the same pond does not work.

How deep does a pond need to be for frogs and newts?

A deep zone of 60 to 80 cm is plenty. From 60 cm down the pond does not freeze to the bottom even in a severe winter, so overwintering newts and larvae are protected. Just as important as the depth, though, is the shallow bank: a generous area with 10 to 30 cm of water serves as the nursery, and at least one side must run out flat so the animals can get out again.

When should I build the pond?

Best in early spring, from mid-March to mid-May · CW 12 to 20. By then the soil has dried out and is easy to work, the amphibians are not yet migrating into the middle of the building site, and the plants have the whole season to root. That way your pond is finished before the summer heat arrives. Autumn works too, but then the plants lack the head start.

Why should I use rainwater instead of tap water?

In many regions tap water is rich in lime and nutrients. Nitrate and phosphate are fertiliser, and in the pond they above all feed the algae. Rainwater is soft and nutrient-poor and keeps the pond in balance from the start. Catch the water in butts. If it is not enough, top up with tap water and let the pond stand for two to three weeks before planting, so the water settles.

How long does it take for amphibians to move in?

It takes patience. Dragonflies and pond skaters are often there within the first weeks. Frogs, toads and newts usually come in the second or third spring, once they have discovered the pond on their travels. You cannot speed this up by moving spawn; that is illegal and dangerous. You help most with a densely planted bank, hideaways on land, and the patience a garden teaches anyway.
