A blunt tool forgives nothing. The secateurs crush the shoot instead of parting it cleanly; the spade slides off the root instead of cutting it. And almost every time, your first thought is: the blade is done for. Nine times out of ten, that is wrong. The blade is gummed up, crusted, tarnished. Tool care is no art. It is a quarter hour of quiet at the workbench and a handful of moves you learn once and then repeat for years.
This article takes away the two fears gardeners have about sharpening: the wrong angle and the worry of ruining something. Both are entirely manageable.

Clean first, then judge
Before you even think about the whetstone: get the blade clean. The most common reason a pruner suddenly tears instead of cutting is a layer of dried sap and resin. This film settles like a stubborn varnish over the edge, glues the blades together and makes every cut smear. Skip this step and you are sharpening past the problem.
Take a cloth with white spirit, methylated spirit or plain Ballistol and wipe the blade down. For stubborn resin, use the rough side of a kitchen sponge or fine steel wool (grade 0000). Rub along the blade, never across the edge. After two minutes the steel gleams again, and often the pruner is usable once more without any grinding at all.
Once the blade is clean, hold the edge up to the light. A sharp edge throws back no shine; it is an invisibly thin line. Silvery reflections along the edge are rolled or rounded spots. Now, and only now, does the stone come into play.
The angle is everything
The one number to remember is the bevel angle: the sloped face that runs out toward the edge, which every blade carries from the factory. On secateurs it usually sits between 20 and 30 degrees, flatter on rough spades and hoes, steeper on fine knives. Your only job when sharpening is to hit exactly that angle.
The trick to finding it is simple: lay the bevel flat on the stone until it seats fully, then tilt the blade a hair until only the cutting edge makes contact. That is the original angle. A felt-tip pen helps you check: colour the bevel black, draw the blade over the stone once, and see where the ink disappears. If it comes off at the edge, the angle is right. If it stays at the edge, you are holding too flat; if it comes off only at the edge, too steep.
The angle the blade came with is always the right one. Your job is to meet it, not to invent it.
Workshop rule
The second iron rule: on a bypass pruner you sharpen only the outer face of the upper blade. It glides past the lower one like two blades of a scissor, hence the name. Its inner face is ground dead flat; make even a few strokes there and you raise a burr that forces the blades apart, and the pruner never cuts cleanly again. Inside, you only take off the burr thrown up by sharpening the outside: a single flat stroke is enough.
Whetstone, file, abrasive pad
Not every tool wants the same stone. As a rough rule: the finer the blade, the finer the abrasive.
- Whetstone or combination stoneFor pruners, billhooks and knives. A combination stone with a coarse side (around grit 400) and a fine side (1000) covers almost everything. Soak it for five minutes before use so the steel swarf does not clog the pores. Always work wet.
- Diamond hand honeSmall, flat, indestructible. Ideal on the go and for hardened steel that a normal stone barely bites. Usable dry or with a drop of water.
- File for rough kitSpades, hoes and axes you sharpen with a flat metal file. A file only cuts on the forward push; lift it on the return stroke or you round off its teeth.
- Abrasive pad and steel woolNot a sharpening tool but the rust brake. A fine pad (grit 240 to 400) lifts surface rust without scratching the steel. Reach for it at the end of every season.
What you do not need is an electric grinder. Angle grinders and bench grinders run so fast that the steel turns blue at the thin edge, and blue means the hardness is gone: the steel stays soft at that spot forever. By hand that cannot happen to you. Slowness is an advantage when sharpening.
Sharpen a pruner in five strokes
Take it apart if you can
Many quality pruners open at the central bolt. Note the order of the washers or take a photo. Disassembled, you sharpen more easily and reach the joint gap where most of the grime collects.Find the bevel
Lay the outer bevel of the upper blade flat on the wet stone and tilt it until only the edge bears. Check with the felt-tip test.Draw in one direction
Draw the blade from heel to tip across the stone, always away from the edge, never sawing back and forth. Ten to fifteen even strokes with light pressure suffice for a normally blunt pruner.Remove the burr
Feel across (not along) the inner edge with your fingernail. If you sense a tiny burr, the edge is sharpened through. Lay the inner face flat on the stone and draw it once to smooth it off.Oil and reassemble
Wipe off the grinding slurry, put a drop of oil on bolt and blades and reassemble the pruner. Set the pivot bolt so the blades run freely but without play.
Rust, the slow death of a blade
Rust does not eat overnight; it eats over the winter. A spade you stand in the corner caked with soil in November comes out in March with a brown crust. Every pit is a spot where the blade never sits perfectly smooth again. Rust is no cosmetic flaw; it is lost material.
The good news: surface rust, the fresh, shallow film, comes off in minutes. Abrasive pad or steel wool 0000 with a little oil, a few passes with the grain, and the steel is bright again. If the rust sits deeper, a bath helps: leave the metal part overnight in household vinegar (five percent), rinse it in the morning, brush the loosened crust away with a brass brush and oil at once. Vinegar attacks bare steel too if you leave it too long; overnight is the upper limit.
Rust's enemy is dryness. Hang your tools up instead of standing them in the corner: that way no moisture wicks up the handle. Clean, dry and lightly oiled, a tool lasts for decades.
Tool by tool
Spades and forks need no razor edge, but a clean bevel along the front edge. Clamp the spade in a vice and file in the direction of the push at a shallow angle until an even, bright bevel forms. A sharp spade slices through turf and roots without your full weight; that saves your back.
The hoe you want genuinely sharp, because it should slice weeds off below the surface, not tear them out. File the bevel on the upper side; the underside stays flat. A sharp draw hoe in May saves you half the weeding in June.
Knives and billhooks (the curved pruning knife) you sharpen like a kitchen blade on the whetstone, at a keen angle, drawing across the whole edge. Here it may get properly sharp: a clean cut heals faster and leaves no entry point for fungi.
Anvil pruners have a straight blade that meets a bearing plate in the middle. Check first whether that plate is still even; if it is dented the pruner crushes, no matter how sharp the blade. The blade itself you sharpen on both sides here.
After sharpening: oil and store it right
The last move is the most important and the most often forgotten. A freshly sharpened, bright blade is the most vulnerable to rust, because you have just ground off the protective oxide layer. So put a thin film of oil on the steel right away (which oil for what is in the questions below).
For the winter break the whole run is worth it: clean, sharpen, oil, rub the wooden handles with linseed oil. November (roughly CW 45 to 48) is ideal, because the beds are cleared and you start spring with sharp kit rather than rusty.
