You bite into the first ripe plum of the year, and right in the flesh sits a pink grub with a dark head. Pure frustration. Behind it is almost always the plum moth, a small night-flying moth that has lived with the stone-fruit trees in our gardens for centuries. The good news: you are not helpless against it. Once you understand its life rhythm, a few patient steps can markedly cut the number of wormy fruit, entirely without reaching for chemicals.
Who exactly is the plum moth?
The plum moth (Grapholita funebrana) is a tiny moth from the tortrix family, with a wingspan of just 12 to 15 mm. Its forewings are marbled grey-brown, with a lighter mirror spot near the wing margin. During the day it sits motionless on bark or leaves and is almost impossible to spot. Only at dusk, when it is mild and still, does it become active and search for mates and egg-laying sites.
It is not the moth itself that harms the harvest, but its caterpillar. From each egg, a tiny larva hatches within a few days and immediately bores into the young fruit. There it tunnels toward the stone, hollows out the flesh and fills the gallery with brownish frass. After two to four weeks the caterpillar is fully grown, reddish and about one centimetre long. It leaves the fruit and pupates, either in a crack in the bark or in the soil at the base of the trunk.
As inconspicuous as the moth is, its offspring work all the more thoroughly. A single female lays between 40 and 80 eggs, each one separately on a different fruit. During a strong flight that means almost every plum on the tree can get its own grub. So it pays to take the moth seriously, even though it looks so harmless.
The main hosts are plum and damson, mirabelle and greengage, occasionally also apricot and peach. The plum moth is therefore a pure stone-fruit specialist and shares only its way of life with the related codling moth, not its host plants.
Two generations, one summer
The key to understanding it lies in the annual cycle. The plum moth overwinters as a fully grown caterpillar in a cocoon under the bark or in the soil. As soon as spring turns reliably warm, it pupates, and from early to mid May (around CW 19) the first moths of the overwintering generation emerge.
This first generation lays its eggs on the still small, unripe fruitlets. The caterpillars that hatch from them often go unnoticed, because many infested young fruit simply drop before you even register them. The real trouble comes later. From this first generation a second develops in warm regions, flying from about July into September (up to around CW 34). Its caterpillars meet the ripening plums, and those are exactly the ones that end up wormy in your harvest basket.
It is not the moth that eats your plums, but the timing you miss.
An old gardener's saying
In cooler upland areas or in a rainy summer, a single generation is sometimes all there is. In the warm wine-growing climates along the Rhine, the Mosel or in southern Baden, by contrast, the second generation can develop vigorously, and in exceptional years there are even the beginnings of a third. The trend of recent years, with long, warm late summers, plays into the pest's hands. All the more reason to know the flight periods in your own garden rather than acting by the calendar.
The greatest harvest damage almost always goes back to the second generation. Anyone who pays attention only in early summer and then eases off gets a nasty surprise in August. Stay on it right up to harvest.
How to spot the infestation reliably
The most telling sign is a small, glassy droplet at the fruit's entry hole, often stained reddish-brown. This gum is the plum's reaction to the injury caused by the caterpillar. If you check the fruit regularly in July and August, these droplets are the first thing you will notice.
A second, clear signal is premature fruit drop. Infested plums seem to ripen too early, turn blue and fall, long before the healthy harvest is ready. Cut such a fruit open and you find the feeding gallery and the brownish frass around the stone, sometimes even the caterpillar itself.
Do not confuse the fruit-related gum with the resin that seeps from trunk and branches. The latter has other causes such as frost cracks, fungal infections or injuries and is no sign of the plum moth. Only the droplet directly at a fruit's entry hole points to the caterpillar.
Secondary rot pathogens like to settle on the injured fruit, chief among them the brown rot Monilia. A small moth hole quickly turns into a brown, sunken, rotting fruit that can infect the whole crop. The moth thus opens the door through which further problems arrive. That is one more reason to remove infested fruit promptly.
Pheromone traps: your early-warning system
Here comes the most important tool, and at the same time the most often misunderstood one. A pheromone trap holds a dispenser with the females' sex attractant. The males fly toward the scent and stick to the glue surface. Important to know: this trap does not wipe out the pest. It catches far too few individuals to reduce the population. What it can do is priceless: it tells you to the day when the flight begins.
Hang the trap from late April to early May (around CW 18) at eye level up to mid-crown, on the sheltered, half-shaded side. One trap is enough for a home garden with a few trees. Check it twice a week and note the catch numbers. The first steady rise marks the start of the flight, and from then on your inner clock is running.
The trick lies in the interval: the caterpillar hatches from the egg only after several days, and you want to hit it before it bores in, because after that it sits protected inside the fruit. As a rule of thumb, aim for the period of about one to one and a half weeks after the first strong catch peak. That is exactly when the young grubs are on the move and vulnerable.
Hang the trap (CW 18)
Put the pheromone trap in the tree before the expected flight begins, in a quiet, half-shaded spot at crown height.
Count twice a week
At each check, note the number of males caught. A sudden rise shows the start of a generation.
Calculate the timing
Count forward about a week from the first catch peak. In that window the caterpillars hatch, before they enter the fruit.
Apply a control measure
Now mechanical and biological remedies work best. Once it has bored in, the caterpillar is barely reachable.
Replace the dispenser
Depending on the product, the attractant lasts four to six weeks. Swap it in good time so you also cleanly capture the second generation.
What really helps against the moth
A single remedy rarely solves the problem. Success lies in combining several patient building blocks across the whole season.
- Gather fallen fruit consistently
Pick up dropped plums at least twice a week and do not put them on the open compost. Each fallen fruit often still holds a live caterpillar that would otherwise supply the next generation.
- Fit a corrugated-cardboard trunk band
From July, wrap a ring of corrugated cardboard around the trunk. Fully grown caterpillars look for a pupation spot there and crawl in. In autumn you take the band off, caterpillars and all, and destroy it.
- Encourage beneficial insects
Parasitic wasps of the genus Trichogramma parasitise the eggs; earwigs and tits eat caterpillars. Nest boxes, deadwood and a flower-rich understorey bring these helpers into the garden.
- Spray biologically if needed
With heavy infestation, preparations with the codling moth granulovirus or with Bacillus thuringiensis help, applied within the calculated hatching window. They act only on the young caterpillar while it is still moving freely.
The order in your head matters: observe first, then act. Anyone who sprays blindly by the calendar often misses the caterpillar altogether and only burdens the beneficial insects. That is why the pheromone trap is no luxury but the very condition for the other measures to land.

Preventing it for next year
The best time to act against the plum moth is, paradoxically, autumn, when the harvest is long since in the jar. Now you lay the groundwork for a moth-poor following year. Gather up truly all the fruit, including the dried-up mummies still hanging in the tree. Inside them and in the fallen fruit sit the overwintering caterpillars that start the new cycle next spring.
A loose, well-kept tree disc helps too: gently loosening the soil in late autumn exposes pupating caterpillars, which then fall prey to birds or freeze. Smooth, healthy bark offers fewer pupation hideouts than rough, mossy bark. A careful summer prune right after harvest keeps the crown open and airy, which also makes life harder for the brown rots.
And finally it pays to look over the fence: the plum moth flies in from neglected neighbouring trees and field hedges. A single unkempt tree nearby can undermine your efforts. A friendly chat with the neighbours about gathering fallen fruit together sometimes does more than any trap.

Are wormy plums still edible?
In principle the plum moth's caterpillar is not poisonous, and you can cut the infested part out generously. Often, though, brown rot has already settled over the bore hole; then the fruit tastes musty and should no longer be eaten. When does the plum moth fly?
