Green Manure Through the Winter Half-Year: No Bed Goes Bare Into Winter

Frost-killed or winter-hardy? How to cover empty beds with green manure in late summer, which type fits when, and how to work it in properly come spring.

When the first beds empty in September because the zucchini, beans and lettuce are harvested, a gap opens up fast. Bare earth looks tidy, but for the soil it is the worst way to head into winter. This is exactly where green manure comes in: a fast-growing carpet of plants that you do not harvest but leave standing for the soil. It holds the crumb together, feeds the soil life, and hands you the bed in spring looser and more alive than you left it.

Why no bed should go bare into winter

Open soil is under constant threat through the cold months. Autumn and winter rain silt up the surface, fine soil particles compact, and at the next downpour the water runs off across the top instead of soaking in. Nutrients, nitrate above all, get washed out and travel into the groundwater, where they are of no use to anyone. On slopes, in extreme cases the rain even carries off the very best crumb.

Green manure turns that around. The roots hold the soil in place and pull soluble nutrients up, where they stay bound in the plant mass. The leaves catch the impact of the raindrops, so the surface stays crumbly. And below ground a whole army of earthworms, fungi and bacteria keeps working, because it gets food and a more even micro-climate. A covered bed freezes less deeply and thaws sooner in spring.

Frost-killed or winter-hardy: the two paths

The most important decision is made right at the seed choice. Green manures split into two camps, and both have their place.

Frost-killed green manure grows up fast, often still flowers, and then dies at the first frosty nights. The plants stay put as a protective mulch layer on the bed. This is the most convenient path: no digging in autumn, no mowing in a wet March. Phacelia, buckwheat and, sown in good time, white mustard belong here.

Winter-hardy green manure survives the cold and keeps growing in spring. It is stronger at rooting through and suppressing weeds, but it asks work of you in spring: you have to cut or work in the stand before it gets too mighty and turns into a weed itself. Winter rye and winter vetch are the classics, often sown as a mix.

Which path you choose depends on the follow-on crop date. If fine-seeded crops like carrots or radishes go into the bed as early as March, a frost-killed sowing is the more relaxed choice. If you want to plant only in May and keep every handspan of soil covered until then, winter rye plays to its strength.

The key green manures in profile

Not every green manure fits every crop rotation. The most common beginner mistake is sowing white mustard or oil radish where cabbage is meant to stand next year. Both are brassicas like cabbage itself and carry the same diseases, clubroot above all. On a cabbage bed you are better reaching for phacelia, which is related to no vegetable family, or for a legume.

A special trick sits in the legumes. Crimson clover, winter vetch and lupin live together with nodule bacteria on their roots that bind nitrogen from the air. This nitrogen stays in the soil and is available to the follow-on crop. Anyone planning heavy feeders like squash, tomato or cabbage next year lays the groundwork for feeding them with a legume green manure in autumn.

The soil never wants to be bare. Leave it free, and nature sows for you, and it sows weeds.

Old gardener's rule

The sowing calendar up to CW 40

On timing there is one simple rule of thumb: the later in the year, the tougher the species must be. For a proper ground cover before winter, the plants still need a few mild weeks to come up.

  1. Early August · CW 32 to 34

    Almost anything still works now. Buckwheat, phacelia and legumes have enough time to grow strong and even flower.
  2. Late August to mid September · CW 35 to 38

    The core window. White mustard and oil radish germinate fast and cover reliably. Phacelia still comes up well too.
  3. Late September to early October · CW 39 to 40

    Winter-hardy only. Winter rye and winter vetch germinate even at cool temperatures and keep growing in spring.
An early frost does frost-killed green manure no harm, on the contrary, it does exactly the work you would otherwise do with the hoe. Only when you get no mild weeks at all after sowing in autumn does a late frost-killed sowing fail to come up properly. Then better switch to winter rye.

How to sow green manure

Green manure is uncomplicated, and that is exactly what makes it so rewarding. You do not need a fine seedbed like for carrots.

  1. Clear and loosen the bed

    Remove crop residues, break up coarse clods with the rake. Deep digging is not needed, loosening the surface is enough.
  2. Broadcast the seed

    Scatter the seed evenly over the area by hand. As a rough guide, 2 to 4 grams per square metre is enough for most species, for rye rather 15 to 20 grams.
  3. Rake in and firm

    Rake the seeds in shallowly so they are covered with about 1 to 2 cm of soil. Then firm with the rake or your feet for good soil contact.
  4. Keep moist

    In dry late-summer weather, water for the first ten days until the sowing has come up. After that it manages on its own.

In spring: work in or leave lying

What was sown quickly in autumn is rewarded in spring. With frost-killed green manure a dry mulch layer lies on the bed. You rake it shallowly into the top layer or push it aside and plant straight in. Either way the material breaks down quickly and turns into humus.

Winter-hardy stands you first need to slow down. Cut rye and vetch close to the ground about two to three weeks before the planned planting, or work them in shallowly. Wait out this time, because freshly worked-in green ties up nitrogen briefly as it rots and would take it from the follow-on crop. After the short pause it reverses, and the nitrogen is available again.

Never dig worked-in green manure deep under. Mixed in shallowly, the material rots with oxygen into valuable humus. Buried deep, it rots without air and smells foul. The top handspan of soil is the right place.

Bottom line

Green manure is one of the few garden tricks where little effort achieves a lot. A handful of seed, twenty minutes broadcast, and the soil supplies itself through the winter. Whether you go for frost-killed species and spare yourself the spring work, or reach for winter rye for maximum cover, depends only on your planting plan. One thing is certain: a covered bed thanks you next year with loose, living soil.
