When is the best time to plant bare-root roses?

Mid-October to mid-November (CW 42 to 46) is ideal, because the soil is still warm and the roots establish before frost. In principle it works all winter, as long as the soil is open and free of frost, at a pinch into March.

How deep does the graft union have to go?

About 5 cm, a good hand's width, below the surface. This protects the join from frost and suppresses wild shoots from the rootstock. Planted too high, the rose freezes and reverts easily.

Do I really have to soak the rose before planting?

Yes. Bare-root roses dry out in transport. Several hours, ideally overnight, with the roots in a bucket of water refills the vessels and clearly improves establishment.

Why do I mound up newly planted roses?

The 15 to 20 cm ridge of soil protects the not-yet-established graft union through the first winter against frost and winter sun. In April you take it down again before the rose starts into growth.

Can I plant where a rose already stood?

Better not. Soil sickness often reigns there, and young roses struggle in it. If you must use the same spot, exchange the soil generously, a hole about 50 cm deep and wide with fresh, compost-rich soil.
