There is a quiet contradiction sitting in almost every garden shed: you build a wildlife-friendly garden, sow wildflowers for the bees, skip the pesticides. And then you tear open a bag of potting soil made largely from a mined-out bog. Gardening peat-free means resolving that contradiction. It is not an exercise in doing without, but one of the most effective climate decisions you can make without ever leaving your garden. This piece explains, calmly and concretely, why peat is a problem, what belongs in the soil instead, and how you can keep even the famously fussy blueberry happy with no peat at all.

Why peat is a problem
Peat forms in bogs over thousands of years. Because the ground there is permanently waterlogged, oxygen is absent and dead plant material never fully decomposes. It settles layer upon layer instead. A raised bog grows by just one millimetre per year in the process. A metre of peat is therefore around a thousand years old.
That exact ground gets dug up for potting soil. To do it, the bog is drained, the upper layers are excavated and pressed into bales. What ends up in the bag at the garden centre is, quite literally, a slice of landscape that will not return for a thousand years.
The real scandal, though, is the carbon. Bogs cover only about three percent of the world's land surface, yet they store twice as much carbon as all the forests on Earth combined. As long as the bog stays wet, that carbon remains safely locked away. The moment it is drained, oxygen reaches the peat, decomposition kicks in, and the stored CO₂ escapes into the atmosphere over years. In Germany, around seven percent of all greenhouse-gas emissions come from drained bogs, even though they make up only a fraction of the land.
For the home garden the point is simple: every bag you leave on the shelf is a real piece of bog that does not have to be dug up.
What peat actually does in the pot
To find a good replacement, it pays to look soberly at what peat can actually do for gardening. Because those are the only properties you need to replace, nothing more.
Peat is structurally stable and does not collapse quickly. It holds a lot of water and releases it evenly. It is naturally low in nutrients, which the industry likes because it can dose feeding precisely. And it is acidic, with a pH around 3 to 4, which is handy for bog-bed plants.
That sounds like a lot, but all of it is replaceable. Coir and wood fibre take over water storage, bark humus and wood fibres provide structure, compost brings nutrients. You set the acidic pH deliberately with sulphur or conifer compost, but only where you truly need it.
Peat has not a single property that could not be rebuilt from renewable materials. It is convenient, not irreplaceable.

The peat-free alternatives at a glance
Peat-free soils are not a single ingredient but a blend. Good products combine several components, because each one has a weakness on its own. These are the key building blocks:
- CompostThe heart of any peat-free soil. It supplies nutrients, soil life and structure. Your own garden compost is free and unbeatable, once sieved and well rotted.
- Wood fibreMade from shredded softwood. It brings air into the substrate and keeps the structure loose. It binds a little nitrogen at first, so good blends come lightly pre-fed.
- Bark humusFinely composted bark. Stable, holds water and nutrients, keeps its structure through the season. A good peat substitute for durability.
- CoirA by-product of the coconut harvest. It stores a great deal of water and is structurally stable. Not ecologically perfect because of long transport routes, but clearly better than peat.
- Green waste and xyliteComposted garden waste and a lignite by-product round out many blends. Regionally available, with no bog mining.
Growing blueberries peat-free
The cultivated blueberry, botanically Vaccinium corymbosum, is the reason many gardeners reach for peat by reflex. It needs acidic soil with a pH between 4 and 5, and peat delivers exactly that. But the plant does not need peat; it needs acidic, airy, humus-rich soil. And you can get that without any bog mining.
Go for a dedicated peat-free rhododendron or bog-bed soil. More and more producers offer acidic substrates that reach the low pH through conifer compost, bark humus and an addition of elemental sulphur instead of peat. Check the label closely, because many "bog-bed soils" still consist almost entirely of peat.
In a pot, mix the substrate yourself: two parts peat-free acidic soil, one part well-rotted conifer compost or bark humus, a handful of sand for drainage. Water with rainwater, because tap water is often high in lime and slowly nudges the pH back up.

You keep the acidic pH for the long run with a mulch layer of pine needles, bark mulch or coffee grounds. Once in spring, roughly mid-March to early April · CW 11 to 14, you work in a little horn meal and, if needed, some garden sulphur. When the leaves yellow between the green veins, that is a classic sign of too high a pH. Then you need more acidity, not more fertiliser.
Switching to peat-free step by step
You do not have to change everything at once. The calmest route is a gradual switch over one season.
- Use up your stock, do not bin it. Finish any peat soil left in the shed before you buy new. Throwing it away does not undo the bog mining.
- Switch at your next purchase. Consistently pick bags with a clear "peat-free" label. There is now a peat-free product for every purpose: sowing, pots and beds.
- Build your own compost. A compost heap or a worm bin gives you the best base for free in the long run, and real independence from the soil bag.
- Water and feed differently. Check with your finger instead of watering on a schedule, and feed a little more often in small doses.
- Observe and fine-tune. Note for a season how your plants respond. Usually you just look a bit more closely when you water.
The most common beginner mistakes
Peat-free soil behaves differently from peat soil, and most of the disappointment comes from treating it like peat. The biggest difference is water. Peat-free substrates release it faster at the surface but hold moisture well down below. Anyone who sees only the dry surface and keeps topping up risks waterlogging in the root zone.
The second point is feeding. Compost-based soil is richer in nutrients than pure peat, but those nutrients are used up faster. With heavy feeders like tomatoes or squash, start feeding organically on a regular basis about six weeks after planting. Wood fibre binds a little nitrogen at first, which is why young plants can look briefly pale green. That passes once the blend has settled in.
