Eighteen metres lie between my back bed and the compost heap. That sounds like nothing. On a clearing Saturday in October it turns into thirty trips, and by the evening I know exactly which of them I made with an overfilled barrow and a rounded back.
Hauling is the invisible work in a garden. Nobody chats enthusiastically about their wheelbarrow over the fence. And yet this is the tool that decides whether a day in the garden leaves you tired or leaves you hurting.
One thing at a time: what separates one wheel from two, what the numbers on the label actually stand for, when a four wheeled cart is the better answer and how to load so that your back does not report back the next morning.
At a glance
- One wheel is nimble, two wheels are steady. The single wheel barrow turns almost on the spot and copes with narrow bed paths, but it tips the moment the load shifts sideways. The two wheel barrow carries heavy loads and asks for path width in return.
- Pneumatic tyres run far more easily on soft ground. PU foam tyres are the same size and puncture proof, but they do not cushion; only the narrow solid rubber wheels dig into wet soil. If you cross a lawn, you want air in the tyre.
- 85 to 100 litres is the standard, bigger is rarely better. Load ratings run from 100 to 250 kg. A 100 litre tray filled to the brim with damp soil is almost impossible to push uphill.
- Heavy material belongs at the front over the axle. Then the wheel carries it instead of you. Further back, the same 40 kg of soil hangs on a long lever and pulls at your arms and back.
- For long distances and heavy pots, take four wheels. A garden cart with a tipping tray pulls more easily over the course of hours than any barrow and carries 200 to 500 kg.
One wheel or two: the basic decision
The classic wheelbarrow has one wheel, and that is not penny pinching, it is a concept. With a single contact point at the front you turn the barrow where it stands and run it over a narrow plank into a raised bed. It is not a narrow machine for all that: such a barrow measures 55 to 65 cm across. The difference lies in the track. With a single wheel only that wheel needs firm ground, and the tray may overhang the beds. The price you pay: you balance. With a full tray of soil, a split second decides whether you still hold it or shovel it up again.
Two wheels take that balancing work off you. The two wheel barrow stands on its own, and you can load it heavily because your arms only push instead of stabilising. In return, both wheels have to run on the path. On a paved yard that is a gain, on an allotment with 60 cm of narrow stepping paths it is a nuisance.
Heavy work calls for two wheels
Sand, gravel, damp soil, broken stone: with these loads the question is not volume but weight per litre. That is where the two wheel barrow plays its strength, because both your arms are free to push.

Volume, tray, tyres: what the numbers mean
The label carries figures that are regularly misread. Volume is not load capacity, load capacity is not an everyday target and tyre size says nothing about how well the thing rolls on your ground.
The four figures that matter
- Tray volume 85 to 100 litres
The DIY store standard, sized correctly for a home garden. 85 litres is slightly narrower and lighter, 100 litres swallows more leaves. Larger builders barrows turn into two person machines once they are full.
- Load capacity 100 to 250 kg
Load capacity comes from the frame, the axle and the wheel, not from the tray material: galvanised barrows run from 160 to 250 kg, plastic trays from 120 to well over 200 kg. And it is a design limit, not a daily target: damp soil weighs roughly 1.3 to 1.6 kg per litre.
- Steel tray or plastic tray
Galvanised steel holds its shape and shrugs off the edge of a spade, because the zinc protects the small bare spot along with itself. The critical places are welded seams, cut edges and standing damp under caked on soil. Polypropylene never rusts and weighs less, but it turns brittle in frost and develops UV cracks after some years.
- Pneumatic, PU foam or solid rubber
A pneumatic tyre cushions, spreads the weight over a wider footprint and rolls far more easily on grass, and it wants a pressure check twice a year. The PU foam tyre has the same size and the same tread, is maintenance free and thorn proof, but it does not cushion. Narrow solid rubber wheels dig into wet soil and belong on made up paths only.
The test before you buy
Stand behind the barrow in the shop and lift the handles. They should sit at roughly the height of your wrists when your arms hang loose. Handles that are too low force you into a rounded back, handles that are too high rob you of leverage.
Garden carts and trolleys: when the distance is long
Beyond a certain distance the sums change. Pushing means carrying and steering at once, and your upper body works against the weight the whole time. Pulling means letting it roll, you walk normally and the four wheels do the rest.
The garden cart is the working version: tubular steel frame, tipping tray, pull handle, ball bearing pneumatic tyres, and depending on the model 75 to 225 litres and 200 to 500 kg of capacity. The tipping function is the real trick, because emptying without lifting is the kindest part of the whole job for your back. The trolley is the family version: higher sides, often timber, room for children, crates and long poles.
Four wheels for long distances and tall pots
On four wheels the cart carries the weight and you only give it direction. That is exactly why pots with an olive tree or an oleander travel better on the cart in spring and autumn than in your two arms across the yard.
Look at the front axle when you buy. A steering axle is what makes the cart usable in a tight garden at all; a fixed one can only be led in wide arcs.
Sack truck, pot trolley, garden bag: the small specialists
Between the wheelbarrow and the cart sit tools that solve exactly one task well and are therefore often overlooked. They cost little and spare you precisely the movement that puts your back out. For harvesting tomatoes or pumpkins, shallow crates and buckets belong in this group: two buckets, carried left and right, load your spine symmetrically, whereas a sack slung over one shoulder does not.
What each one is for
- Sack truck for bags, pots and root balls
Bags of soil, bark mulch, large container roses, young trees with a wrapped root ball: anything tall and heavy with a firm base. Models for home use carry 100 to 250 kg. Slide the toe plate under the load, tip it back, and from there the axle carries it.
- Pot trolley for heavy containers
A pot trolley on four castors turns an immovable 80 kg container into something you push into winter quarters with one hand. That holds for paving, concrete and indoors; on grass, gravel or mulch the small castors seize up, and a plank laid underneath is what helps there. The diameter has to match the base of the pot, and take the load rating one step above the dry weight: wet soil weighs considerably more.
- Collapsible garden bag for prunings and leaves
The self standing bag made of woven plastic usually holds 272 litres and carries 50 to 65 kg. It stands open beside you while you cut, and empty it folds down to a flat disc of around 30 cm that fits behind the shed door. For leaves it beats the barrow outright: there is nothing to shovel.
Leaves are lighter than they look, soil is not
A 100 litre tray of dry leaves might weigh 8 kg, the same tray of damp soil well over 130 kg. The mistake always runs in the same direction: you get used to filling to the brim with leaves and then do the same with compost. Fix a mark at half tray height in your mind for heavy material.
Loading and pushing properly
Your back does not take damage from the weight as such, but from the combination of weight and leverage. Everything you can do better with a barrow comes down to keeping that lever short.
Park the barrow as close to the load as you can
Every metre you carry a spadeful of soil is a movement with outstretched arms. The barrow belongs next to the heap, not out on the path.
Heavy material to the front, over the axle
The axle is the pivot. What sits above it is carried by the wheel; what sits behind it is carried by you. So stones and damp soil go forward over the wheel, light prunings on top.
Do not fill to the rim
Two hand widths of air below the edge are the difference between one trip and one trip plus sweeping up. With gravel and soil, half a tray is the maximum.
Lift with your legs, not with your back
Step closer to the barrow, feet offset, back straight, come up out of the knees. There are no binding limits; the rules of thumb used in occupational safety are 15 kg for women and 25 kg for men per lift. Frequency counts just as much: thirty trips on a clearing Saturday weigh heavier than the single sack. Above that, split the load or roll it.
Push rather than pull, and stay in one line
When you push, your trunk supports the load; when you pull it backwards, it hangs off your arms. Take wide arcs rather than tight ones. On a slope the first rule is to fill less. What you cannot hold effortlessly going downhill was already too much at the top. Lead the barrow ahead of you downhill, never across the slope.
Tip it out rather than shovelling it out
Handles up, let the barrow roll over its front edge. Emptying a full barrow with a spade means doing the work twice.
The barrow is not there to carry your maximum. It is there so that you can still manage the second round in the evening.

Barrow or cart: deciding on the actual case
The wheelbarrow wins on short, narrow routes, on loose ground, when you want to tip out at an exact spot and when you are shovelling material rather than collecting it. Of the two it is the one that gets you over a narrow plank into a raised bed; for steps and loading edges the sack truck is the better choice.
The cart wins over long distances and with many separate items rather than one heap. For harvesting potatoes into crates or moving containers around it is clearly superior. Sometimes both are wrong: for hedge trimmings the garden bag wins, for twenty bags of compost the sack truck. Tyre pressure, care and winter storage
A decent wheelbarrow lasts two decades if you give it ten minutes twice a year: air in the tyre, oil on the axle, tight bolts, a dry place to stand. Those twenty minutes are exactly what almost everybody forgets.
Check the tyre pressure twice a year
The sidewall carries the maximum permitted pressure, which for the common sizes 3.50-8 and 4.00-8 is 2.1 to 3.5 bar depending on the version. The right working pressure is 2 to 2.5 bar; below 1.5 bar the tyre flexes off the rim. A half flat tyre rolls noticeably harder and steers vaguely. A foot pump with a gauge is enough, and the valve is usually a car valve.
Oil the axle, rinse out the tray
A drop of oil at the ends of the axle, then spin the wheel once. Caked on soil draws moisture and works its way into every scratch in the zinc layer; a splash of water and a stiff brush will do.
Store it tipped up and under cover in winter
Stood on its nose or hung on the wall, it collects no rainwater. Before that, tighten the bolts between tray and frame: one loose tray bolt will tear the sheet metal at the next full load. If you tidy the shed by late November · CW 48, the barrow is the first candidate.

If you note in your garden diary when you spread compost, moved leaves or rolled the containers into their winter spot, then after two or three years you can see which week of the year is the heavy hauling week. For me it is almost always the second half of October. Since I have known that, I pump up the tyre beforehand and put the garden bag out by the bed the evening before. My back notices the difference.
Common questions about moving things around the garden
One wheel or two on a wheelbarrow, which is better?
It depends on your paths. Both are wide, 55 to 65 cm across; the difference is the track. With a single wheel only that wheel needs firm ground, the tray may overhang the beds, and the barrow turns almost on the spot and copes with a plank; it does tip, though, if the load shifts. A two wheel barrow stands on its own and carries heavy loads without any balancing, but it needs a path where both wheels can run and turns badly in tight spaces. On an allotment the single wheel wins, on wide paved routes the two wheeler.
How many litres should a wheelbarrow for a home garden have?
85 to 100 litres is the sensible standard. 85 litres is easier to manoeuvre, 100 litres gives more volume for leaves and prunings. Bigger is rarely better, because the volume cannot be used up with heavy materials: a 100 litre tray filled to the brim with damp soil is beyond 130 kg. Also look at the load rating of 100 to 250 kg.
Pneumatic or solid tyres on a wheelbarrow?
Pneumatic tyres run far more easily on grass, mulch and loose soil, because they cushion and spread the weight over a wider footprint; they want a pressure check twice a year. Puncture proof PU foam tyres have the same size and the same footprint, are maintenance free and indifferent to thorns, but they pass every jolt on to your wrists. Only the narrow solid rubber wheels dig into wet soil, and those belong on made up surfaces. Mostly lawn and beds: take air. Only paving and firm paths, with thorns in the prunings: PU is the easier life.
How much pressure does a wheelbarrow tyre need?
The sidewall carries the maximum permitted pressure, 2.1 to 3.5 bar depending on the version. As a working pressure, around 2 to 2.5 bar is right for the common sizes 3.50-8 and 4.00-8. Never exceed the figure on the sidewall, not even briefly under a heavy load; anything that overwhelms the tyre should be split into two trips. On deep soft ground a little less pressure helps instead, because the tyre sits wider, but do not go below 1.5 bar. Check in early March · CW 10 and late August · CW 35.
How do I move a heavy container on my own?
Do not carry it, roll it. A pot trolley on four castors under the pot turns an 80 kg container into something you push with one hand on paving; what matters is a matching diameter and the stated load rating. If the container is already standing, lift it with a board used as a lever and slide the trolley underneath with your free hand. Never put your foot under a tilted container: if it slips, you break a bone in your foot. The rules of thumb of 15 and 25 kg apply to lifting, not to rolling.
