Gewann Hettlinger is an allotment garden site in Freiburg im Breisgau (Baden-Württemberg), belonging to the Verein der Gartenfreunde Freiburg Nord e. V., which is affiliated with the Landesverband der Gartenfreunde Baden-Württemberg e. V. The site was first documented in 1931 with around 260 allotments on land owned by the Heilig-Geist-Stiftung and had previously been fallow land, also used as an ice pond in winter. From 1948 to 1954 the site was managed by the Gartenverein Freiburg West, before the newly founded Kleingartenverein Gartenfreunde Freiburg Nord signed the master lease agreement on 14 April 1954. The open site comprises 201 gardens ranging from 180 to 250 square meters, bordered by the Franzosenweg to the west and the freight rail line to the east, and is mainly a self-sufficiency garden focused on vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The site includes the club restaurant „Rettichbar“ with a beer garden.

How do I get an allotment garden here?
Plots are handed out by the club itself, not by the city and not by us. The usual route: contact the club, ask to be put on the waiting list, and apply to several sites at the same time. How long it takes depends heavily on the region, from a few weeks in rural areas to several years in sought-after city locations. What does a plot cost?
Rent is capped by law and comes to roughly 0.15 to 0.40 euros per square metre per year, depending on the federal state, Baden-Württemberg included. On top of that come club fees, water, electricity and levies, together around 330 euros a year for a 300 m² plot. When you move in you pay the previous tenant a one-off transfer fee for the hut and the planting. Each club sets the exact amounts itself.
What do I have to grow in an allotment garden?
The German Federal Allotment Garden Act requires horticultural use. The rule of thumb is the thirds rule: roughly one third of the area for fruit and vegetables, one third for recreation, one third for paths and the hut. A purely ornamental or lawn garden is not permitted. You may not live in the hut permanently.
