Kleingartenverein 'Westheim' is located in the Magdeburg West district (Saxony-Anhalt) on Harsdorfer Bierweg. According to a 1994 brochure from the Magdeburg city planning office, the club was founded in 1936, and the site's oldest lease agreements also date from 1936 and 1940. It is a member of the Verband der Gartenfreunde Magdeburg e.V. and has been registered in the association register at the Stendal local court under number VR 10258 since 20 July 1990. The site comprises around 225 to 235 plots with an average size of roughly 400 to 506 square meters. New members initially sign a two year fixed term lease, which automatically converts to an open ended lease if not terminated.

What does a plot cost?
Rent is capped by law and comes to roughly 0.15 to 0.40 euros per square metre per year, depending on the federal state, Saxony-Anhalt included. On top of that come club fees, water, electricity and levies, together around 330 euros a year for a 300 m² plot. When you move in you pay the previous tenant a one-off transfer fee for the hut and the planting. Each club sets the exact amounts itself.
What do I have to grow in an allotment garden?
The German Federal Allotment Garden Act requires horticultural use. The rule of thumb is the thirds rule: roughly one third of the area for fruit and vegetables, one third for recreation, one third for paths and the hut. A purely ornamental or lawn garden is not permitted. You may not live in the hut permanently.
