It was founded on 26 July 1934 as the Kreisverband der Kleingärtner Meiningen and has carried its current name since 2014, after the Kreisverband der Kleingärtner Schmalkalden was dissolved and its clubs joined. The federation brings together 39 member clubs with around 1,925 plots and about 3,000 club members across the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district and the town of Römhild in the Hildburghausen district. It is part of the Landesverband Thüringen der Gartenfreunde e.V.
