The Climate-Resilient Garden: Turn Your Soil Into a Sponge, Keep the Rain, Plant Tough

Drought and heavy rain are two sides of the same coin. Here is how to ready your garden for both extremes: humus-rich soil that acts like a sponge, keeping rain on site, and drought-proof planting.

The last few summers have taught many of us the same lesson: the garden swings between two extremes. First the soil sits bone-dry for weeks, lawns turn straw-yellow, and in the evening you lug watering cans around. Then the weather flips, and within an hour 40 litres of rain fall per square metre, more than the parched soil can take in. The water runs off the surface, carries soil away and vanishes down the drain. Both extremes share the same root and the same solution, and it lies quite literally beneath your feet.

Two Extremes, One Problem

Drought and heavy rain feel like opposites, but they are two sides of the same coin. A soil that cannot absorb rain is also a soil with no water in reserve during a dry spell. Compacted, humus-poor earth takes in only the first few millimetres during a downpour, the rest rushes off. And because barely anything soaked in, no reserve remains in the depths for the next dry period.

A climate-resilient garden turns this logic around. It takes in every drop, stores it in the soil and slowly returns it to the roots. You are not working against the weather, you are building a buffer that cushions both swings. The beauty of it: almost everything that helps against drought also helps against heavy rain.

The Soil Is Your Water Store

It all starts with humus. Humus is the dark, crumbly part of the soil, holding decomposed organic matter and soil life. It works like a sponge: a single percent more humus content holds roughly 4 to 5 litres of extra water per square metre and per ten centimetres of soil depth. On a bed of ten square metres that quickly adds up to several full watering cans the soil stores for you.

You do not build humus overnight, but reliably over the years. The levers are simple: work compost in shallowly, mulch with organic matter, never leave the soil bare if you can help it, and dig it over as little as possible. Every time you dig deep, you burn humus and disturb the fungal networks and earthworms that build your crumb structure. A digging fork to loosen the soil is almost always enough.

Feed the soil life, do not fertilise it. Earthworms are the best drainage engineers you can get. Their tunnels reach into deeper layers and channel heavy rain to where it is stored. You encourage them with a permanent mulch cover and with compost, not with mineral complete fertiliser. A soil full of life is automatically a soil that absorbs and holds water.

Keep the Rain in the Garden Instead of Draining It

The second building block is water management at the surface. The goal is this: rain should soak in where it falls, not disappear into the sewer. Every litre you hold in the garden is a litre you will not miss next summer.

  1. Unseal surfaces

    Take a look at how much of your garden is sealed. Every concrete slab and every asphalt surface sends rain straight away. Where you can, replace closed surfaces with grass-jointed paving, gravel or bound-gravel paths. Even a bound-gravel surface instead of concrete lets the rain soak in on the spot.

  2. Dig an infiltration swale

    At the lowest point of your garden, dig a shallow, wide swale, roughly 20 to 30 cm deep. Channel the water from paved surfaces there. During heavy rain it fills up, and within a day everything has soaked away. Between rain events the swale is simply a slightly lowered bed.

  3. Plant the swale

    A rain garden is a planted swale. Set species in the middle that tolerate both brief wet feet and drought, such as purple loosestrife, daylily or meadow cranesbill. Their roots keep the soil open and raise the infiltration rate year after year.

  4. Harvest rainwater

    Put rain barrels or a cistern at the downpipes. A normal house roof delivers roughly one litre per square metre of roof area for every millimetre of rain. A 100-square-metre roof therefore fills to about 1000 litres at 10 mm of rain. This soft, low-lime water is ideal for watering.

Before laying out a swale, test how quickly your soil drains. Dig a hole about 30 cm deep, fill it with water and let it drain. Fill again and measure: if the water level drops by more than 1 cm per hour, your soil drains well enough for a rain garden. On heavy, waterlogged clay soils, a larger, shallower swale and patient humus-building help.

Mulching: The Simplest Climate Adaptation

If you do only one single thing this year, make it this: stop leaving any soil bare. Open, unshaded earth heats up to 50 degrees and more in the sun, water evaporates unchecked, and the top layer crusts over. A mulch layer turns all of that around.

Mulch is any organic layer you lay on the soil: grass clippings (wilted, thin), straw, leaves, shredded shrub prunings or crop residues. Five to eight centimetres are enough. Beneath it the earth stays noticeably cooler and moist, evaporation drops sharply, and rain no longer hits with full force but seeps in gently.

Bare soil is an open wound. Covered soil heals itself.

Gardener's rule of thumb

The side effect is humus-building in fast motion. The mulch layer is broken down from below and steadily turned into humus. So you are fertilising, insulating and watering, so to speak, in a single pass. In the vegetable bed you mulch thinner and with quickly rotting material, while for perennials and woody plants the layer may be thicker and coarser.

Fresh, thickly applied grass clippings rot into a smelly, airtight layer and harm the plants beneath. Wilt them first and apply only thinly, or mix them with coarser material. At the first smell of rot, loosen the layer immediately.

Plants That Withstand Drought

The third building block is the right plants. Many drought artists come from the Mediterranean or from lean dry grasslands and have two strategies: either deep taproots that fetch water from the depths, or grey, hairy or fleshy leaves that slow evaporation and store water. Plant such species and you will barely water at all in high summer.

  • Deep-rooters fetch water from below

    Comfrey, mullein and many wild perennials drive roots far below the drying topsoil. On the side they loosen the soil and pump nutrients up.

  • Grey leaves defy the sun

    Lavender, cotton lavender and steppe sage carry felted, silvery leaves that reflect light and slow evaporation. They love lean, free-draining soil.

  • Succulent water stores

    Stonecrop and houseleek store water in thick leaves and survive even container drought. Ideal for hot, sunny corners and green roofs.

  • Tough long-bloomers

    Yarrow, coneflower and catmint bloom for weeks, need little water and are a magnet for bees and hoverflies.

A gravel bed is the most consistent form of climate-resilient planting. On a free-draining, lean base grows a selection of deep-rooting drought perennials, topped with a layer of mineral mulch made of chippings or gravel. It lets rain soak in at once, suppresses weeds and keeps the root collars dry, which makes winter easier especially for Mediterranean plants. Once established, such a bed gets by with almost no watering and no fertiliser at all.

Lavender is the model plant of the climate-resilient garden. It comes from the lean limestone slopes of Provence, shrugs off heat and drought, and wants above all one thing to be avoided: wet feet in winter. In free-draining, lean soil it survives the lowland winter without protection. After it has established, you water it practically never. Just as undemanding are stonecrop, yarrow, comfrey and the imposing mullein.

Watering With a System, When It Must Be

Even the climate-resilient garden sometimes needs water in extreme spells and for young plants. The difference lies in the technique: not a little every day, but rarely and deeply. Whoever moistens the surface every evening trains shallow roots that wilt on the first dry day. Whoever waters thoroughly once a week draws the roots into the depths, where it stays moist longer.

Water early in the morning, straight at the root and unhurried. In the morning the least evaporates, the plant heads into the hot day well prepared, and dry foliage in the evening prevents fungal diseases. A watering rim of mounded soil around new plantings keeps the water over the root instead of letting it run off.

A climate-resilient garden does not appear in a single season. But every bag of compost, every mulch layer and every drought perennial takes you a step further, and the effect adds up. After a few years you have a garden that shrugs off cloudbursts and sits out heatwaves, while you reach for the watering can less often than ever before.

Common questions about the climate-resilient garden

How do I make my soil store water faster?

Mulching brings the quickest effect: a five to eight centimetre layer of grass clippings, leaves or straw immediately lowers evaporation and protects the crumb structure. In the medium term you build humus with compost and little digging, which holds roughly 4 to 5 litres of extra water per square metre for each percent of gain. Together, both make the soil noticeably more absorbent within one to two years.

What is a rain garden and is it worth it in a small garden?

A rain garden is a shallow, planted swale into which you channel rainwater from the roof and paved surfaces. During heavy rain it fills up and drains within a day, in between it is a normal bed. It is worth it even small: a swale of just a few square metres already relieves the sewer and stores water in the soil instead of draining it away.

Loose gravel over free-draining soil is no problem, quite the opposite: it lets rain soak in at once and keeps the earth beneath cool. What is harmful are so-called gravel gardens with membrane and compacted subbase, because there the water runs off the surface and the area heats up strongly. What matters is that beneath the mineral lies an open, planted and free-draining soil.
