Frost Protection for Early-Blooming Fruit Trees: Practical, Not Panicked

Apricot, peach and almond bloom in March, when night frosts are still normal. Here is how to protect the blossom with the right spot, fleece and overhead irrigation, without the panic.

In late March the apricot stands in full bloom, pink-white and dense, and then the forecast calls minus 4 degrees for the coming night. This is one of the most nerve-wracking moments of the gardening year, because the whole harvest hangs on a single night. The good news: you are not helpless. There is a handful of concrete moves that make the difference between a full crate and a bare tree, and most cost little more than fleece, an alarm clock and a bit of planning the year before.

Why the early bloomers are so exposed

The early fruit trees come from warmer corners of the world and brought a flowering habit with them that is risky in the DACH region. The apricot (Prunus armeniaca) often opens its flowers as early as mid to late March (CW 12 to 13), long before the late-frost danger is over. The tree itself is astonishingly hardy in the wood, down to about minus 22 degrees. The open blossom, though, is delicate: from about minus 2 degrees the first fruitlets freeze, at minus 4 degrees almost everything is lost.

The developmental stage is decisive. The closed bud still shrugs off minus 5 to minus 7 degrees, the opening balloon bud around minus 3 degrees, the open flower and the young fruitlet only minus 1 to minus 2 degrees. The further into bloom, the more sensitive. That is why apricot, almond (Prunus dulcis) and peach (Prunus persica) are hit harder than the later sweet cherry or apple.

You have to tell two kinds of frost apart. Radiation frost comes on clear, windless nights: the ground gives its warmth to the sky, cold air sinks, and a pool of cold forms over the meadow. Fleece and irrigation work well against it. Advective frost, by contrast, pushes in a cold air mass with wind, often for days. There is little a home garden can do against that one, here only the choice of variety counts.

The best frost protection begins the year before

The most effective measure is the one hardly anyone thinks of: delay the bloom until the cold nights are over. A tree that flowers a week later skips half the late-frost season.

  • A cool spot instead of a south-wall pocket

    A hot south wall pulls the bloom forward by one to two weeks and delivers the tree straight to the late frost. A spot on the east or west side, airy and slightly raised, keeps it in bud longer.

  • Choose late varieties

    For apricot, late-blooming varieties such as 'Bergeron' or 'Kioto' pay off, for peach the robust 'Roter Weinbergpfirsich'. They open their flowers days later than early varieties and so escape many a frost.

  • Keep the soil cold

    A pale mulch layer and no heavy nitrogen feeding in spring keep the soil cool and slow the bud break. Warm, fed tree discs push earlier.

  • No pool of cold under the tree

    Do not plant in the lowest hollow of the garden. Where cold air can drain away at night, on a gentle slope for instance, no frost collects.

It is not the frost that kills the blossom, it is the too-early blossom that meets the frost.

Old orchardist's rule

Fleece: the classic against radiation frost

Garden fleece of 30 to 50 grams per square metre holds back about 2 to 4 degrees on a clear night, because it slows the radiation of heat into the sky. That is often exactly enough to clear the critical point. For small trees, espaliers and container plants it is the simplest solution.

  1. Check in good time

    Read the forecast in the afternoon. If a clear, windless night below 2 degrees is on the way, it gets critical. Damp, cloudy nights are usually harmless.

  2. Drape loosely, do not wrap tight

    Lay the fleece like a tent over the crown so a layer of air stays between blossom and cloth. Wherever the fleece rests directly on a flower, it freezes there anyway.

  3. Take it down to the ground

    The cloth has to trap the warm ground air. Bring it down to the soil and weigh the edges with stones, otherwise the cold creeps in from below.

  4. Take it off again during the day

    As soon as the sun rises and it climbs above zero, open the fleece. Otherwise no bees reach the flowers, and without pollination the best frost protection is useless.

Frost is not a drama, it is a night you can plan for. Set yourself a frost alarm: if the thermometer drops to 3 degrees in the evening and the sky is clear, it will be coldest around 4 to 6 in the morning. Whoever has the fleece in place beforehand does not have to go out at night.

Overhead irrigation: why a shell of ice protects

The method seems paradoxical and is still the strongest in the toolbox. As it freezes, water releases heat, the so-called heat of fusion. As long as liquid water freezes on the blossom, the temperature of the blossom cannot fall below zero degrees. The trick: sprinkle finely without pause, so fresh water keeps freezing on.

The glassy shell of ice that sheathes the branches in the morning looks like a catastrophe and is in truth the proof that it worked. The only thing that matters is to sprinkle without interruption, from just before the first frost until the ice thaws off by itself in the morning. Whoever turns it off in between does more harm than no water at all, because evaporative cooling then sets in.

In the home garden, irrigation is more for single, easily reachable trees and low espaliers. It needs a lot of water, a frost-proof rotary head or lawn sprinkler and a tree whose branches can carry the load of ice. Young, thin-shooted trees snap under the weight. For most home gardens fleece is the more practical route, irrigation the showpiece for the ambitious self-supplier with a sturdy old tree.

More helpers for the cold night

Beside fleece and water there are a few home remedies that give little on their own but half a degree in sum. And it is exactly that half degree that sometimes decides.

  • Frost candles and tea lights set up in a wind shelter lift the temperature right at the tree a little. They only work in still air and only for single small trees.
  • Water barrels and stones under the crown store the sun's warmth during the day and give it off slowly at night. A simple, maintenance-free buffer.
  • Water the tree the evening before. Moist soil stores more heat than dry soil and radiates it at night. That can make 1 to 2 degrees of difference.
  • No pruning in early spring. A cut spurs the bud break. Apricot and peach you prune anyway only in summer after the harvest.

Combine what you have. Water the soil in the evening, drape fleece loosely over the crown, a water barrel underneath: these three free moves together often carry you past the critical minus 2 degrees, without needing an irrigation system at all.

After the frost night: look first, then judge

The morning after a cold night everything looks dramatic, drooping flowers, glassy leaves. Wait until midday, until the sun has thawed things, before you pass judgement. A lot recovers.

The decisive look goes inside the flower. Cut a few blossoms open lengthwise and look at the pistil and the little green ovary at the base. If it is juicy green, the flower lives. If it is brown or black, that fruit set is lost. A single brown petal edge, on the other hand, is harmless.

And even if part of the blossom is gone: fruit trees set far more flowers than they can carry fruit. Losing half to two thirds of the flowers often barely dents the harvest, because the rest ripens all the better. Only when almost everything has frozen does the crop fail entirely. No reason to write the tree off, next year is coming for sure.

Besides the apricot, peach, almond, nectarine and, in mild spots, the early sour cherry belong to the endangered early bloomers. The same order holds for all of them: first the right spot, then the late variety, then fleece and irrigation as emergency protection for that one critical night.
